Why North Devon’s Coast Is One of the UK’s Best Kept Wildlife Secrets
May 6, 2026This is the question we are asked more than any other when people are booking. We offer multiple trip lengths, and choosing between them depends on who is in your group, what you want to see, and how confident you are about sea conditions.
Here is a straightforward guide to help you decide.
What Does the 1-Hour Safari Cover?
The 1-hour safari heads east out of Ilfracombe harbour, taking in Hele Bay, Sampson’s Coves, and towards Watermouth Harbour, where you get a sea-level view of Watermouth Castle. The route passes beneath dramatic cliff sections and through areas where grey seals are regularly spotted hauled out on rock ledges.
This trip is fast-paced and action-packed. It covers the most accessible section of the coastline and gives you a proper feel for RIB travel and the North Devon coast without committing to a longer trip.
Who Is the 1-Hour Safari Best For?
- Families with younger children (under 6) who may have shorter attention spans or be less confident on the water
- Groups with someone who is uncertain about seasickness or open water
- Anyone with limited time on a day trip to Ilfracombe
- First-time RIB trip passengers who want to try before committing to a longer adventure
What Does the 2-Hour Safari Cover?
The 2-hour safari extends significantly further, taking in Watermouth Castle, Combe Martin Bay, the Greater Hangman headland, and the Valley of the Rocks. The Greater Hangman is the highest sea cliff in England, and seeing it from the water is genuinely breathtaking. The Valley of the Rocks section offers some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the South West.
The longer trip gives significantly more time in seal territory, more opportunities for dolphin and porpoise sightings, and a much deeper experience of the coastline’s variety. It also includes more of the open water sections where larger wildlife encounters are more likely.
Who Is the 2-Hour Safari Best For?
- Anyone who wants to see the best of the North Devon coast rather than a taster
- Wildlife enthusiasts who want to maximise sighting opportunities
- Groups who are comfortable on the water and looking for a proper adventure
- Families with older children who can sustain the experience and will genuinely appreciate the scenery
- Visitors who may not be back and want to make the most of the trip
What About the Sunset Safari?
Our Sunset Safari is a particular favourite, regardless of trip length. Evening light on the North Devon cliffs is extraordinary, and the late evening on the water is genuinely magical. This trip is specifically timed to coincide with golden hour and is perfect for photography, wildlife watching in the lower-light conditions that seals and seabirds prefer, and a more atmospheric experience overall.
Practical Tips Before You Book
- Wear more layers than you think you need. Wind chill on a moving RIB is significant even in summer
- Waterproof jackets are strongly recommended. Spray is part of the experience.
- Children must be 5 or over for any safari trip
- Book in advance during school holidays. Trips fill quickly in July and August
