Lundy Island: The Offshore Adventure Just Waiting Off the North Devon Coast
April 15, 2026North Devon has one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in England — and some of the best wildlife watching in the UK. The waters off Ilfracombe, Lynton, and Lundy are home to common dolphins, harbour porpoise, Atlantic grey seals, and an impressive variety of seabirds.
Seeing these animals from the shore is one thing. Seeing them from a RIB, out on the water with the North Devon cliffs above you — that’s something else entirely.
What Wildlife Can You Expect to See?
Common dolphins are the most frequently sighted cetacean in these waters, particularly in summer and autumn. They’re fast, playful, and often travel in groups — a pod riding alongside the boat is one of those experiences that genuinely stays with you.
Harbour porpoise are smaller and shyer but frequently spotted, particularly in the sheltered bays and estuaries. Grey seals haul out on rocky ledges along the coast year-round — we know the colonies well and always take our safaris to the areas of most recent activity.
Birdlife is exceptional too. Gannets diving at high speed, guillemots, razorbills, and in season, puffins around Lundy. Our skippers have an eye for all of it.
Why a RIB Changes Everything
You could see some of this from the South West Coast Path. But on a RIB — our 10-metre Humber vessels running twin 300hp Suzuki engines — you’re in the water’s world, not looking at it from a distance.
We can get into sea caves. We can follow a dolphin pod. We can position alongside a seal colony without disturbing the animals. The RIB gives us access and agility that a larger vessel simply can’t match.
The stability of our boats means the trips are comfortable for people who don’t usually travel well on water. We’ve had guests of all ages on board, including children and people who were convinced they’d hate it.
When Is the Best Time to Go?
We run safaris from February through to October. The peak wildlife season runs from late spring through to early autumn — dolphins are particularly active in summer, and the puffins are around Lundy from April to August.
That said, every month has its own highlights. Winter safaris have a wildness to them that the summer trips don’t — the light, the swell, the dramatic cliff faces with fewer other boats around. Some of our most memorable trips have been in early spring.
We operate whatever the conditions allow. Safety is always the priority, and our skippers — all RYA-qualified, all involved with Ilfracombe Lifeboat station — are the right people to make that call.
Book Early in Summer
Our trips sell out quickly in the peak summer months. If you’re planning to visit North Devon between June and September and want to join us on the water, booking ahead is strongly advisable.
We’re part of the Ilfracombe harbour family — the same crew behind Ilfracombe Princess and Wild Frontier Charters. If a sea safari isn’t quite what you’re looking for, we’ll point you in the right direction.
