Dolphins in North Devon: What to Expect and the Best Way to See Them
April 2, 2026Twelve miles off the North Devon coast, in the Bristol Channel, sits one of the most remarkable islands in England. Lundy has no cars, no mains electricity, a resident puffin colony, grey seals, and spectacular Atlantic grey skies that feel a long way from the mainland.
From Ilfracombe, we run shuttle services to Lundy — departing around 8am and picking up around 5pm — giving you a full day on the island.
What’s on Lundy?
Lundy is three miles long and half a mile wide, owned by the National Trust and managed by the Landmark Trust. Accommodation on the island ranges from a historic lighthouse to converted farm buildings.
The puffins are the main wildlife draw for most visitors, nesting on the island from April to August. Atlantic grey seals are resident year-round. The diving around Lundy is renowned as some of the best in the UK — the island sits on the UK’s first Marine Nature Reserve.
There’s a pub, a small shop, and walking trails across the heathland. For a day out that feels genuinely different from anything you can do on the mainland, Lundy is hard to beat.
The Journey as Part of the Experience
The crossing to Lundy takes around an hour to an hour and a half from Ilfracombe, depending on conditions. It passes some of the most dramatic coastline on the North Devon coast — sea caves, cliffs, and the chance to spot wildlife in the open channel.
Our skippers are knowledgeable about what you’re passing and always keep an eye out for dolphin or porpoise activity on the crossing.
Crossings are weather-dependent and we’ll always give you the honest picture about conditions before you travel.
How to Book
Lundy shuttle services run seasonally. Spaces are limited and popular with families, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a day that feels like a genuine adventure.
Check our website for departure dates and availability. We’d recommend booking well in advance for summer crossings — Lundy has been attracting more visitors in recent years and the best spots fill quickly.
