One of the most common questions we receive before a sea safari booking is what to wear. It is a genuinely important question because the conditions on a high-speed RIB in the Bristol Channel are quite different from conditions on land, even in July.
This guide covers everything you need to be comfortable, dry, and free to enjoy the experience fully.
The Fundamental Rule: Prepare for Spray
A sea safari on a RIB is an active, exhilarating experience. You will encounter spray. On calmer days this may be light; in choppier conditions it will be more significant. The correct preparation is not to hope for a dry trip but to dress so that spray does not matter.
The Essential Layer: A Waterproof Jacket
A waterproof outer layer is the single most important item to bring. It does not need to be a specialist sailing jacket, but it must be genuinely waterproof rather than water-resistant. A standard outdoor or walking waterproof works well. We do have a limited supply of additional waterproofs available on board, but we cannot guarantee sizes, so bringing your own is strongly recommended.
Under the Waterproof: More Than You Think
Even in July, sea temperature off the North Devon coast runs between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius and the wind chill effect at speed is significant. Wearing a base layer and a mid layer (a long-sleeved top and a fleece or light jumper) under a waterproof jacket gives you full flexibility. You can always remove layers on a warm, calm day. You cannot add them if you have not brought them.
Shorts and t-shirts work for the warmest summer days in the right conditions, but bringing a warm layer to put on when needed is always sensible.
Footwear
Non-slip, closed-toe footwear is required on board. Trainers or walking shoes are ideal. Flip flops, sandals, and open-toed footwear are not permitted as they do not provide adequate grip on a wet deck or ankle support in the RIB seating position.
Children’s Clothing
Children feel the cold more quickly than adults on the water. For children, we strongly recommend:
- A full waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers if available.
- Warm layers underneath.
- Socks and trainers rather than any open footwear.
- A hat: ears and the top of the head lose heat quickly at speed.
What Not to Wear
- Long, flowing clothing that could catch in the boat.
- Anything you would not want to get wet.
- Jewellery that could snag on safety equipment.
- High heels or wedge footwear.
What Else to Bring
- Sunscreen: even on overcast days. UV reflection from water is higher than on land.
- Sunglasses: polarised lenses make a significant difference to visibility on the water and reduce eye strain.
- Camera or phone in a waterproof case or pocket: the seal and wildlife encounters happen quickly.
- Any personal medication: including seasickness tablets if you know you are prone.
